Come On, Shake That Booty!

You’ve seen them on dog programs on TV, dog & owner teams that put on a fabulous show filled with musically choreographed tricks & flashy moves. Known as Canine Freestyle, this modern day dog sport is a mixture of obedience, tricks & dance that allows for creative interpretation. A true team sport! But how do you get started?

Toledo Dog Training is excited to have Linda Blanchard for one day to put on a wonderful Canine Freestyle workshop. This one day workshop will introduce you & your dog to the Canine Freestyle world.

Topics Covered: Learn to teach your dog to spin, back up, sidepass, weave, curtsy, flip back, zoom and more. Learn about costuming, props, choreography and music selection. See videos of other freestylers, pick music, learn about proficiency (required moves) tests and much more!!

Linda Blanchard Bio: Certified Freestyle Competition and Proficiency Test Judge for WCFO. She and "Robbie" competed in the first WCFO Freestyle Competition in 2000; they were the 2002 WCFO North American Freestyle Champions, the first WCFO Heelwork To Music Champions and they have earned the highest title offered - Perfect Dance Partners in Heelwork To Music!!

Linda and "Krysta" have earned their Perfect Dance Partners in Heelwork To Music and also in Musical Freestyle, as well as Pairs and Team titles!! Robbie and Krysta are among the highest titled freestyle dogs in WCFO. Every summer Linda teaches Freestyle at Camp Gone To The Dogs in Vermont.

This one day workshop will introduce you & your dog to a life of playing frisbee for fun, or to compete in the growing sport. Do you want to see some disc dogs in action? At Toledo Dog Training we play an active role in educating parents, dog owners and children about how to be safe around dogs. Our upcoming Kids Dog Training Camp is an educational & fun program to teach kids how to properly & safely interact with both known & unknown dogs.

Our Kids Dog Training Camp is a wonderful way for your child to enjoy a day learning about dogs and to build up your child’s confidence and self-esteem. Our one day Kids Camp will help your child learn proper dog handling skills, dog safety, and even allow your child to work with a dog on basic dog training & agility.

Can I take more than one class at a time? Absolutely! This is a question I am often asked from students who want to enroll in more than one intermediate class. As long as you & your dog meet the prerequisites for the class, you can join both! For example, if in January you would like to take the Intermediate Dog Training and Tricks Class go for it!

****Taking more than one class in the same night depends on both you & your dog's energy level. If at the end of one class your dog seems wiped out, then taking more than one class a night would not be a good choice. If however, you and your dog are still ready to go, by all means, take two. :)

Private Behavioral Training-If you are experiencing behavioral problems (excessive barking, separation anxiety,leadership struggles etc.) with your dog, behavior modification is required. This can be accomplished with private behavioral training.

We're Moving! But don't worry, it's just down the road. Thanks to all of you, I have been able to expand Toledo Dog Training's Holland location. In September
our Holland headquarters will move into a 2500sf building just behind Kohl's (6128C Merger Drive). Needless to say I'm pretty tickled about the expansion. With this move, new & improved classes and services will be offered (eventually). Classes will continue to be taught once a week in Perrysburg.

Toledo Dog Training will do its part to educate the public about the importance of positive puppy training and to raise money for Assistance Dogs Of America Inc.

The fundraiser and informative lecture will be held from 6:30-9 p.m. on Monday, July 27 at Toledo Dog Training’s headquarters in Holland, Ohio. The event seeks to raise money for Assistance Dogs Of America’s Puppy Program and to educate the public positive puppy training and puppy behavior.

This 2.5-hour workshop will teach puppy owners how to provide a well-balanced & harmonious household with their puppy. Miscommunication between puppies and owners can result in chaos. This workshop will address such issues, and get owners and their puppies off to a good start.

Toledo Dog Training Offers Pet First Aid Training During National Pet First Aid Awareness Month

According to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), 25 percent more pets would survive if just one pet first aid technique were applied prior to getting emergency veterinary care. American Red Cross Pet First Aid Classes provides participants with pet-saving techniques and shows participants how to recognize emergencies and confidently respond to life-threatening conditions.

Toledo Dog Training, is a top-quality dog training center with locations in Holland and Perrysburg is offering area dog owners and pet-care providers the opportunity to gain crucial dog first aid and CPR skills that could prove life saving should their pet ever experience an emergency. The Association of Pet Dog Trainers States Marley & Me Highlights the Positive Impact of Training

Professional dog trainers agree that upcoming movie is a wonderful opportunity to promote the benefits of positive, science-based dog training. Working with a professional trainer and learning about your dog’s physical and mental needs can eliminate potential behavior problems in the home.

Greenville, SC (PRWeb) – December 19, 2008 –The Association of Pet Dog Trainers, the largest educational and professional association for dog trainers in the world, believes the movie Marley & Me is a great opportunity to promote reward based training for all dogs. The movie, based on the bestselling book by John Grogan, opens Christmas Day and depicts an exuberant Labrador Retriever whose behavior creates turmoil in his owners’ lives.

Dogs with the size, energy level and behavior issues of Marley often end up in shelters because their owners do not know how to work with them. Labrador Retrievers are one of the top five breeds that are relinquished to shelters. This belies their image as a favorite family dog. Working with a trainer and understanding your dog’s physical and mental needs can go a long way toward keeping dogs in their homes.

Some members of the APDT have provided tips for living with “unruly” dogs on the APDT’s Web site, www.apdt.com.

Some highlights include:

Crate Training – Teach puppies to love their crate. Crates prevent dogs from engaging in destructive behaviors around the house when owners are not at home or unable to supervise them with their complete attention.
Reinforce for Calm, Quiet Behavior – Trainer Tayrn Hodge recommends reinforcing your dog for calm, quiet behavior and to have them “sit or lie down to get everything – sit at doorways, sit or lie-down for meals, sit for petting, sit for getting his leash on, sit before tossing his ball.”
Use Proper Equipment for Walks - There are a large variety of new products on the market that can assist with making your walks with large or unruly dogs more pleasant. Some of the new products you can try are head halters and front clip harnesses which prevent pulling without choking your dog or causing discomfort.
Understand Your Dog’s Breed Tendencies – Learn about the type of dog you’re bringing into your home before you do so. Paul Owens, author and trainer jokes, “…in my 35 years of training, I’ve met maybe two Labs who aren’t constantly self-employed as gardeners, home decorators and official bull-in-a-china shop court jesters.” You can find breed information through breed clubs, breed rescue web sites, and from trainers and shelter workers.
Provide Appropriate Exercise and Outlets for Play – Kellyann Conway, President of the APDT, says, “Exercising your dog is important but making time to *play* with your dog is vital to developing and maintaining a great relationship with him. Actively playing with your dog will keep him fit both physically and mentally.”
Environmental Enrichment –Trainer Teoti Anderson says, “Dogs need outlets for their energy. Some dogs would be just as happy munching on your sofa as chasing a tennis ball! It’s up to us to teach them what’s appropriate.” There are many toys today that are designed to stimulate your dog’s mind and keep them occupied for.

As early as possible, you should start to get your puppy/dog use to being handled. He must learn to trust you and others to manipulate varies parts of his body for his own health and safety. You want to be able to touch all parts of him including his paws, ears, mouth, collar and tail.

How To Play With Your Dog Class

1. Puppy Meetups: Meet other local Puppy Owners. If your dog is less than a year old and you would like to meet other puppy owners to help socialize your puppy, join Toledo Dog Training’s Puppy Group & Dog Walking Group.

We can meet at Toledo Dog Training's Holland location for puppy play dates, member's homes or go to the park for walks.

Our unique Therapy Dog Training Course prepares both the dog & owner/handler to become a registered Pet Partner through Delta Society! Delta Society is the only national registry that requires volunteer training and screening of animal/handler teams. Delta Society's Pet Partner Teams are able to assist in Animal-Assisted Activity and Animal Assisted Therapy programs. Teams can visit participating animal programs in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, schools and other facilities.
After graduation, we will help you connect with local facilities in your area.

Our Therapy Dog Training class focuses on preparing the handler and dog for the therapy environment. We will work on skills that include working around medical equipment, unpredictable circumstances, loud noises, distractions, medical scents & even have mock visits!

Prerequisite For Dogs: For dogs over 1 year & with owner for at least 6 months. Current Vaccines, This is an advanced-level course and all dogs should have their AKC Canine Good Citizen title within past 2 years. Please note: dogs that have been trained for any type of bite work cannot enroll.

Prerequisite For Handlers/Owner: Handler must be at least 10 years old to become a Pet Partner.

Class Details: 6-1hr classes, plus 1 Pet Partner evaluation & Delta Society's Pet Partners Team Manual (Manual value $42)

Canine Good Citizen Class:

Canine Good Citizen Class: Help your dog become a valued member of the community by enrolling in The Canine Good Citizen Class (CGC). Started in 1989, CGC is a certification program that is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

Our Canine Good Citizen Classis an intermediate-level dog training class geared towards passing the Canine Good Citizen certification test.

Toledo Dog Training addresses these issues by offering a variety of dog training services to meet the needs of dog owners in the Toledo metro area. “We are dedicated to improving relationships between owners and their dogs. Now, new to our services is Toledo Dog Training’s Puppy Meetup Group,” said Tonya Wilhelm, owner and dog trainer.

Puppy socialization is a key component in helping ensure a mentally stable adult dog. Studies show that exposing puppies to a variety of people, places, and things in the early stages of development help puppies develop into confident and well-adjusted dogs.

At Toledo Dog Training’s Puppy Meetups, puppies can enjoy romping & playing with one another while being closely monitored by an experienced dog trainer and the puppy owners. Toledo Dog Training & Doggie Day Camp is proud to announce the opening of its brand-new dog training & day camp center. The Toledo Dog Training staff invite the community to an open house on October 13th from 11-3 pm at the new Holland location, at 601 S McCord Rd in Holland, Ohio 43528. Please join us to celebrate the long-awaited opening of this wonderful new facility.

The open house will provide a chance for everyone to tour the new dog training & day camp center and will also serve as a fundraiser for DogWorks Inc. DogWorks, Inc. is an all volunteer, nonprofit (pending 501c3), no kennel, domestic sporting dog group. Our purpose is to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abandoned, neglected and unwanted sporting dogs of various breeds, pure and mixes.

Also during the open house, you can have your dog's photo taken by Tuff Photo Studios, your dog can enjoy a doggie massage by PetMassage, and even take part in a doggie costume contest starting at 12:30pm. We will also be having a raffle for a doggie bag with prizes donated by The Doggie Boutique and dog treat & cake samples from Perky Paws Café. Of course we will have plenty of door prizes from Toledo Dog Training!

Doggie day care centers are becoming increasingly popular in today’s society. “Dogs are playing a larger role in our lives than ever before, and dog owners are choosing to provide their dogs with the good life they deserve,” Wilhelm explains. “However, our Doggie Day Camp is not your typical Dog Day Care. Day Campers are given Private Dog Training Lessons specific to the owner’s training goals. Our Doggie Day Camp focuses on training, not dog-dog play with the exception of Puppy Day Camp,” she clarifies. She continues to say, “every interaction a dog has at camp is supervised and specific to the owner’s training program.”

There are many benefits to Toledo Dog Training’s programs. Ongoing training sessions help provide dogs with an exercise to perform while stimulating their brains. This is a great way for dogs to use up excess energy while having fun at the same time. “We also encourage and teach owners how to appropriately play with their dogs, which strengthens their relationship. Play training helps to prevent both the owner and dog from becoming bored.” Wilhelm says.

All training at Toledo Dog Training uses gentle and fun training methods that improve the communication between owner and dog. The courses use positive-reinforcement training and focuses on educating owners on humane leadership skills. Harsh and inhumane punishment-based methods are not allowed in class. “I feel that this type of ‘training’ destroys the relationship between dog and owner, and escalates or creates aggression. Your dog training lessons are meant to be both fun and educational.” Wilhelm informs. She continues to say, “training is not just about obedient behavior, but strengthening and building better relationships between owner and dog.”

Our Doggie Day Camp is not your typical Dog Day Care. Day Campers are given Private Dog Training Lessons specific to your training goals. Our Doggie Day Camp focuses on training, not dog-dog play. However, if your dog & our other Day Campers enjoy dog socialization, proper play sessions are available. All play sessions are being monitored for proper socialization to make sure every camper is enjoying playtime.

Each session of Doggie Day Camp is individualized to your training goals; which can include: Proper Manners, Basic Commands, Trick Training or even Confidence Building. Your dog will receive at least one hour of private training throughout their day at camp. After each day you will receive a detailed progress report, possible homework and training tips.

Benefits of becoming a Toledo Dog Training Assistant:

Pay Reimbursement: Every class hour you assist can be reimbursed for $9 worth of Toledo Dog Training classes, lessons or workshops by using a reimbursement voucher. You may use your vouchers yourself, or donate them to a friend or rescue group.

Requirements For Becoming A Toledo Dog Training Class Assistant:
Basic knowledge of dog behavior
Desire to learn dog behavior
Comfortable around all breeds of dogs
Comfortable dealing with people
You agree with our training philosophy
You respect the instructor's role in the classroom and act in a manner that supports the instructor's teaching style, making a conscious effort not to contradict the instructor or the written homework
You do not offer behavioral advice to students, and defer these questions to the instructor
You are willing to commit to assisting all classes in a session, and willing to coordinate with the instructor for classes you will not be able to assist
You have reviewed the class syllabus and understand the theory behind it

Toledo Dog Training Assistant Responsibilities:
Arrive a ½ hour before the start of class to help set up dog training room, move dogs, etc. (first class of the night)
Stay a ½ hour after class to help clean up, move dogs, etc (last class of the night)
Assist students as needed
Assist instructor as needed

Our dog-training courses are fun & educational for both dogs & their owners. We believe that a true leader is fair & consistent without using aggressive techniques. We believe owners should be able to enjoy their dogs in their everyday routine. Semi-private class sizes allow more one on one time with each student and flexibility in lessons.
